Do I Need a C1 Licence?

The easiest way to start is not with jargon, but with the vehicle you want to drive. C1 usually becomes relevant when the vehicle is above the normal car-licence weight range but still within the medium-sized vehicle category. This page helps you work out whether C1 is likely to be the right route before you move on to the dedicated training or checker pages.

Plain-English C1 guidance

Written for learners comparing C1 routes, not for people who already know the licence system inside out.

Linked to practical training

Each guide connects the research question to real training decisions such as package length, vehicle type and test preparation.

North West context

The advice is framed around learners travelling from Wigan, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside and Cheshire.

The three checks that matter first

C1 decisions usually come down to vehicle weight, your existing licence entitlement and how the vehicle will be used. A motorhome, horsebox and ambulance can all point to C1, but the exact answer still depends on the vehicle details.

  • Check the vehicle MAM or plated weight
  • Check whether C1 already appears on your driving licence
  • Check whether any trailer or professional-use rules change the route

When C1 is commonly searched

Learners often arrive here because they are becoming a student paramedic, buying a larger motorhome, moving up to a horsebox or being asked to drive a 7.5 tonne vehicle. Those are strong signals that C1 is worth checking carefully.

If you are still unsure, use the C1 quiz or send an enquiry with the vehicle weight and intended use.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can a calculator give me a legal answer?

A calculator can guide you, but the legal answer depends on official vehicle and licence details. Always check the vehicle plate, your licence and GOV.UK/DVLA guidance.

What if I passed my car test before 1997?

You may already have C1 entitlement, but you should check the back of your licence and any expiry or restriction codes before relying on it.

Need the practical route as well?

Once the research question is clear, the next step is comparing the C1 packages and choosing the right enquiry route.
